Course Descriptions:
Beginning Italian:
Pretty self explainatory, learning Italian starting from the basics.
Sport and Culture in Italy:
This course analyses the role of sport in contemporary Italian society and the relationship between sport and culture in Italy. A focus on the interrelationship of politics, media, and sport will create a wider understanding of social and political issues in Italy from nineteenth century unification, through the Fascist regime leading up to the Second World War, and the Republican era that continues today.
Iconography: The secret language of Italian Renaissance Art
This course provides an overview of the signs and symbols that help to decipher the main artworks produced in Florence during the late 14th century until the beginning of the 16th century. The Italian Renaissance is rich in meaningful imagery, firmly rooted in both classical and Christian heritage, whose meanings and messages are not always immediately apparent.
The Culture of Food and Wine in Italy:
This course will introduce you to the textured cultural histories of Italian food and wine. Your approach will be a mixture of first-hand experience (field trips, guided visits and several tastings) and interpretative analysis (through the examination of selected food texts, your own written assignments, in-class debates and your entries in a personal food journal). Through a multi-disciplinary approach to food and wine you will address a broad variety of key contemporary issues including slow-food, organic foods and the origins (and preservation) of regional variations. You will also develop an awareness of more sophisticated ways of looking at food in the fields of food anthropology, the psychology of food consumption, the symbolic aspects of food and the social construction of its meaning.

Keeping up with my fitness
It took me a few days of getting lost but I have started to get down a good running path as well as a fantastic bike path.
My first run... after 3 miles i just knew i was lost, took 2 very wrong turns and ended up asking multiple people where the Druomo was, and even when I got there I was still a little backwards and took a full loop around it to try and figure out where my apartment was.
My first bike ride... I tried to use a map of a ride that someone posted. It did not go well at all. I only rode about 15 miles and I mostly just confused. But I did find an amazing view of Florence.
I went to the local bike shop and got a map with turn by turn directions on it. This helped once I finally got out of the city. My camera died so I couldn't get any pics, but it was literally the most beautiful views marge(my bike) and I have ever seen together. I will be doing the ride again soon, so look out for those pics...

Welcome to Florence Italy
Ciao!
I have made it safely here to this lovely city of Florence, Italy. I have moved in with my 4 other roommates, Kallyn (who i share a room with), Leslie, Rachael and Amber. We all get along great! which is a huge relief and a lot of fun.
We live in a great location, 3 blocks from the Druomo, which is a beautiful church in the middle of Florence. When i saw the Druomo for the first time it was amazing, I am not a touristy person, but it did move me seeing such a beautiful church.
My school is in a prime location as well. I still can't believe i take classes here.
We went to explore the town more with a guide, and I fell in love with the Ponte Vecchio.
The roommates first night out together...
... We met 3 nice Italian guys (they truely are just friends) who took up to this night club Flo, which overlook Florence, and they got us into VIP with bottle service. They took care of everything! it was such a fun night.

August 8 – 11 Harvey Penick Junior All-Star
Grey Rock Golf Club- Austin, TX
Ahh the summer comes to an end in the best city, Austin Texas. The golf course was beautiful, the sun was out everyday and we all just enjoyed the last week together as much as we could. Work was enjoyable this week because the end was so close.
For the first time all summer i had a visitor! Greg came and visited me. Him and I went out the first night there, then for my day off we went to him lakehouse, which was beautiful. He left mid week so i could spend the last few nights with my team but it was great to see him and he got to see first hand what i was doing all summer (he kindly volunteered to be a timing station on hole 17).
The best was the last night we were there. We went to a very nice dinner then out on 6th street.
Saying goodbye to everyone was not fun. The airport hugs and goodbyes were sincere and difficult but I couldn't be more happy about the summer I spent with 7 complete strangers who became best friends. I made a video for my team that I put on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF4Ui5FZM9M&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
Currently we all still tweet at eachother often and talk on facebook. I hope to see Lauren over winter break because we both have places in Florida in the same town...
