Friday

June 7-10 Quad Cities

Short Hills C.C.- East Moline, Illinois

We got to East Moline early, and had alot of spare time because it was still considered a training tournament. When we got there it was late so we called it a night. The boys had private housing and the girls stayed at the host hotel.

The next day we met the staff at Short Hills Country Club and set up head quarters and went out to mark the golf course where the tournament was being held.

The next day we went over to the course where the qualifier round was being held and marked and prepped that course. We did minimal set up for this course because we were only spending one day here.
The team mascott: Garth... The superintendent's dog (i miss that doggie!)

With the extra time we explored the Quad cities, and I got to go on a few runs. At night we went over to the house where the boys were staying and would hang out, play pool and watch t.v.

At the John Deere Pavillion:

Team 5 departed for Quad Cities...

Meet Team 5

Team 5 (3 Communication & 5 Operations interns)

The Comms:

They are responsible for all the paperwork, media, photography and website updating. I don’t fully understand all they do but I’ll tell you from what I’ve observed this far.

On a set up day they will make all the cart signs for the week, work on pairings, make hole location sheets, take scenery pictures of the course and all paperwork for the registration packets.

During tournament days they are responsible for getting pictures of all the players, getting quotes of the leaders, live scoring, entering in scores, writing stories, blogs and tweets about the tournament for the website. Before the final round they have to repair according to scores from the first two days of the tournament. Like I said I don’t quite know everything they do but during tournament days they are the last to leave headquarters.

Team 5 commies:

Alexis W – nickname: puck.

From Pennsylvania but goes to school in Kentucky. She is a sports nut and could talk anyones ear off about hockey or just sports in general. Alexis is one of the most talkative people I have ever met, and can relate almost anything anyone says back to a story about her or someone she knows. She’s kind of a goof but non the less a good asset to the team when it comes to staying on top of tasks that need to get done for the comms. She loves to be in control and her favorite spot in the car during road trips to the next course is shotgun/navigator.

Aaron S-

Nick name: hyphen/seegs

From LA but goes to school at Indiana University. Aaron is probably one of the goofiest if not the most goofy kid I have ever had to work with. Aaron also loves sports, doesn’t play much but is a sports nerd. Before almost every sentence he will start by saying “yay ya” and before he gets off the radio he’ll end by saying “ok copy”, like clockwork. Aaron always has someone laughing, weather its with him or at him. I can’t really describe Aaron in words, he’s one of those people you will just have to meet inorder to fully understand what I am talking about.

Ben M- nickname: borgan/rainbow.

From Wisconsin but goes to graduate school in Minnesota. I saved Ben for last because well, he is my best guy friend on the team. Yes, I feel bad saying it but some people you just get along better with other. Ben, like the rest is a sports fan, but unlike the rest is quite an athlete himself. He loves playing basketball and football, and is a big reason why our team has a football and plays catch in the parking lot to kill

time. Ben has such an easy going personality and no matter what happens he is pretty much in the same mood. He loves to joke around and keeps the team laughing at one ridiculous comment after the other. I love having Ben on the team and most days he keeps me sane.

The Ops:

The operations interns do everything outside when it comes to setting up and running a tournament.

When we get to a new course the first thing we will do is unload what we will need for the week from the trailer then take a ride of the course. When looking at a course for the first time we will see what needs to be marked (hazards and out of bounds) as well as make a cooler map to see where there needs to be coolers and trash cans.

On a set up day we will go out and do all the course marking, choose hole locations for the tournament and practice round, prep banners, put up tents on the first and 10th tee box as well as prepping what needs to be done for the next day.

During the practice round we will stake and rope the putting green and first tee, put up banners, stuff registration packets, put out trash cans.

On tournament days first thing in the morning we will look t our assignments to see who will either, set up the course (set tees, flip sand bucket lids on each hole, put out pace of play banners on 2, 5,8,11,14 and 17) put out coolers (6 product coolers and anywhere from 5-10 5gallon coolers) stake & rope and banner maintenance, put up tent tops and table skirts, and set up volunteer registration. During a round we will be out on the course rules officiating and making sure the groups are on pace. After the round is over and the scores are in we will breakdown the course. Break down can usually be done by the first and second person to get off the course. The trash is replaced, coolers brought in, and emptied, sand bucket lids are flipped and the pace of play banners are brought in.

Everyday and each tournament is different so that is just the jist of what we do.

Team 5 ops:

Shelby M.- Nickname: shell/shelbers

From Maryland but goes to school at Elon University in North Carolina. The first thing she will tell you is that she is a huge Duke fan. I think if she could redo college she'd probably end up at Duke and go to every basketball game she could. She studies sports communication at school and like most of the rest of my team is a sports nut. Shelby is easy to work with, loves to help out and will do almost anything you ask her to without hesitation. She is always laughing. I roomed with Shelby at IRW (intern recruiting weekend) weekend and have known her the longest of the rest of the team. She is soft spoken and hard to upset.

Zach R.- Nickname: z-russ/hookem

From Huston, Texas and went to school at the University of Texas. I'll start by saying Zach is not your average Asian, infact we love joking around with him about it. He is nerdy, played chess competitively and is an accounting major (yes all very asian) but other then that he is just an average joe to loves to joke around, toss a football, play golf and basketball. In the morning he can be a pessimist but as soon as the first joke of the day is cracked he is in a good mood. Zach is the biggest diva out of all the guys but its quite funny. He hates cooler duty in the morning and I laugh everytime he gets put on it because he always will make a negative comment about it. He loves being on his phone and applies for more jobs then anyone I know. Zach loves making movie references and jokes to lighten the mood.

Josh K.- Nickname: Yoshi

From Indiana and goes to school at Valpo University (some small college in Indiana). Josh loves golf. Plays in college and I think the hardest part of being with us this summer is that he doesn't get to play everyday like he normally would in the summer. We call Josh a cop because of the way he carries himself and how he loves being persistent. Josh likes things to be done in a timely manor and the right way. He doesn't take criticism well, and get defensive when you question the way he did something. Josh is great to have on the team because he is great with the parents and players, we call him our team 'schmoozer'. He is also a workhorse and is always asking what he can do next. He is easy going expect in the mornings he can be a bit moody (like Zach, which can be fun to watch them bicker in the morning if issues arise). Everyone loves working with him because he keeps everyone in a good mood with his multiple impersonations and random song outbursts.

Lauren G.- Nickname: LG

From Indiana and goes to school at the University of Indiana. LG is definitely my bestfriend on the team. She played golf at Indiana for four year and also loves the sport. Lauren is quiet and reserved when you first meet her but once you get to know her she is a ball. At work she keeps to herself and is doing whatever needs to be done. She keeps her head down and out of the radar around the course but loves to have a good time when the working day is done. I don't know how it happened but right away Lauren and I became close friends and team loves to joke with us about it. Probably the most 'chill' person I know and is also very hard to anger. Not much phases or bothers Lauren which makes her very easy to get along with. I have had an absolute blast getting to know her and going on random adventures with her. When she leaves the summer she hopes to be a golf coach, which I know she will easily succeed in.

Summer in a Nutshell

A summer interning with the American Junior Golf Ass.

Summer: After spending an extra week in Arizona to hangout with my friends I went home to Chicago for a week to pack up my life (the family is moving to Florida). I made a suitcase for my summer on the road and a separate suitcase for first semester abroad.

What exactly am I doing all summer?... I got an internship as an Operations intern with the American Jr. Golf Ass. I am on team 5, which travels the Midwest region. Each team consists of 3 communications and 5 operations interns. There are a total of 6 teams, who all travel within their designated region of the US.
